  3. This is the PAYROLL USA screen that appears when translating the Payroll 
  4. Register to a dBASE III file.  The .DBF file is written on the output directory 
  5. On our machine the data is on drive D, on your machine it may be C or some 
  6. other disk drive. Normally, if you have only one employee file, the output data 
  7. directory will be \PAYOUT . If you are using multiple employee files it may be 
  8. something like \SMITH\PAYOUT where SMITH is the PAYROLL USA configuration file 
  9. name for these employees.  If you are unsure of directories run PAYUSA and 
  10. access the configuration program to check where the output directory is set to.

  12. Note that several "productivity" programs, as well as dBASE, can read or 
  13. translate .DBF files.  Included later in this section is an example of using 
  14. .DBF files with our newly purchased copy of QUATTRO PRO Version 1.0, from 
  15. Borland International, Inc.  QUATTRO PRO is a new (1989/1990) enhanced version 
  16. of the QUATTRO spreadsheet program. QUATTRO PRO is "State of the Art", it has 
  17. many advanced features and presentation graphics, it can read many file types 
  18. directly, including dBASE and Lotus (both 123 and Symphony), and it can link 
  19. multiple spreadsheets together (a 3 dimensional spreadsheet).

  23. Here we are using an old version of dBASE III to look at the \PAYOUT\PAYDB3.DBF 
  24. file. Our .DBF files need no further conversion, they are ready to use and all 
  25. the regular dBASE functions will work with them.  You can write your own dBASE 
  26. programs to print special reports, custom checks, etc. The screens used in this 
  27. presentation are electronic photographs of actual dBASE III screens.

  31. The first page of the structure display - as you will see it is quite normal, 
  32. just as though you had keyed it in the hard way.  There are several screens of 
  33. the structure which you can page through on your own machine.

  37. We have paged down to the end of the structure and are just about to look at 
  38. the first record in the file with the "EDIT 1" command.

  42. This is the start of Gillian Davis's record as displayed by the dBASE Edit 
  43. function.  There are several screens of this record which we have omitted to 
  44. save space.

  48. Here we have paged down to the end of Gillian Davis's record and we are done 
  49. with dBASE.  As with all the PAYROLL USA export features you have your choice 
  50. of current (most recent pay only) or year to date figures to use for the dBASE 
  51. export.

  55. In the remainder of this section we will show you how to use Borland's QUATTRO 
  56. PRO spreadsheet with a dBASE file exported from PAYROLL USA.

  60. Just Retrieve the file, real simple, no special translation needed. Even though 
  61. it is a dBASE file, QUATTRO PRO Retrieve's it as though it were one of QUATTRO 
  62. PRO's own spreadsheet files. Translation must be taking place during the 
  63. Retrieve, but it is completely transparent to the user.  However, be sure to 
  64. enter the .DBF extension as part of the file name or part of the file search 
  65. criteria.

  69. And here we have the dBASE file in a QUATTRO PRO spreadsheet.  The dBASE field 
  70. names are automatically used as the titles to each column, the column widths 
  71. are automatically set to the dBASE field widths, and the records are set out 
  72. one after another ready for use with QUATTRO PRO's Database commands or for 
  73. Graphing, etc.

  77. We did not have space here to move all the way across the spreadsheet, but 
  78. these are the next few columns. All QUATTRO PRO's features can be used.
